Finding Your Fit with Yoga

This past November, we will thrilled to present members with a special Signature Fitness Program – Yoga for the Soul. We flew in Ken “Nateshvar” Scott from Vancouver to facilitate the class at Mayfair Lakeshore. Nateshvar (which translates into “The King of Dancers,” a name awarded to him by Yogi Amrit Desai at Kripalu Center), has been featured in such magazines as Vogue, W, and The New York Times. Self magazine named him one of the top ten yoga instructors in the United States.

He has served as a trainer and transformative guide to many, including top athletes, actors, executives and politicians throughout the world. Tesh’s clients have included Donna Karan, Peter Gabriel, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Hilary Clinton and the late Robin Williams.

Before the class, we had a chance to sit down with him and ask him a couple questions. The first question we asked was: “If someone wanted to try yoga, where should they start?”  Watch our interview to find out!

Here is a list of some of some different types of yoga classes that we have available at Mayfair Clubs:

Ashtanga

Six established and strenuous pose sequences practiced sequentially as progress is made. Ashtangis move rapidly, flowing from one pose to the next with each inhale and exhale. Each series of poses linked by the breath this way is called a vinyasa.

We offer an Astanga class that is either a 60 or 90-minute practice that incorporates an intense flow of postures to build strength of body and mind, increasing stamina amidst a calming environment.

Hatha

One of the six original branches of yoga, “hatha” encompasses nearly all types of modern yoga. Classes described as “hatha” on studio schedules are typically a classical approach to yogic breathing exercises and postures.

If you’d like to try a Hatha Yoga class, Mayfair Clubs offers Hatha Yoga where we complete traditional hatha yoga sequences including standing postures, twisting, side stretching, forward/back bending, inversions and balances with focus on proper body alignment, breath and core development.

Restorative

A series of four or five simple poses that are held for long periods of time. Frequently props are used (blankets, bolsters, and soothing eye pillows) to encourage deep relaxation.

If you’d like to check out a Restorative Yoga class, Mayfair offers a class focused on centering your breath and body, aligning the physical and mental by practicing stillness or gentle movement for an extended period of time. Props are used to assist in holding poses for longer periods of time.

Vinyasa / Power

An active and athletic style of yoga adapted from the traditional ashtanga system in the late 1980s influenced by aerobics. The style of Power Yoga varies on the teacher.  Classes called “vinyasa” or “flow” in your gym or studio can be vastly different but in general stem from this movement and from ashtanga as well.

Yin

A quiet, meditative yoga practice. Yin focuses on lengthening tissues and is meant to complement yang yoga—your muscle-forming Anusara, ashtanga, Iyengar. Yin poses are passive, make use of gravity and are held for long periods of time.

If you’d like to try a Yin Yoga class, Mayfair Clubs offers a Yin Yoga class for a 60 minute practice that incorporates an intense flow of postures to build strength of body and mind, increasing stamina amidst a calming environment.

Want to Try Yoga with a Twist?

We also offer Aerial Yoga, an anti gravity form of yoga where the body weight in your postures are supported by a silk hammock, and YoGo, that combines spinning and yoga into one class.
